„FIRE“, „WATER“, „EARTH“, „AIR“ – and „AURA“. On Gunnarsson’s „ELEMENTS EP“ the ancient greek concept of the four elements which constitute all being in this world, experiences not only a musical expansion. His fifth element – „AURA“ – is what „umami“ is for the sense of taste: Kind of hard to describe, yet an essential quality that as a distinct taste covers what cannot be represented by any combination of the traditionally recognized taste receptors.
As basic as this concept might appear, as purely Gunnarsson’s five instrumental miniatures sound. Make no mistake though: This is not about tone-painting nor program music. During the process of representing each element with a distinguishable profile through aural accentuation of their core characteristics, Gunnarsson was mostly concerned with reduction for the sake of clarity and lucidity. Not a single note, not even a rest in the score is superfluous. The composer has freed the five short pieces of all ballast and invites the listeners to follow suit. Their purity, immaculateness and almost natural cleansing effect trigger meditation like experiences of relief, relaxation and deceleration. The focus is on what really counts – which is essence.
