Themes of community, isolation, and hometown nostalgia come together in Elijah Wolf’s new single “texaco lights” — his first release since stepping away to launch his own label and artist management company, Mtn Laurel Recording Co.
Wolf spent two years focused on Mtn Laurel, whose growing roster includes Colin Miller and h.pruz. In 2024, an invitation to open solo for Julian Lage’s US tour helped Wolf reconnect with his own music and motivated him to get back to creating.
“Felix Walworth (Florist // Told Slant) and I were in their studio digging around on my laptop, and I happened upon some old recordings I didn’t remember saving. I clicked one randomly, and it turned out to be a rough version of this song from years ago. Felix liked it, and we decided to finish it together. The concept of picking up where I last left off felt really good,”said Wolf.
“texaco lights” continues the lineage of Wolf’s previous work — the shimmering Forgiving Season with Sam Cohen and Photay, the expansive Brighter Lighting featuring Nels Cline, and his intimate debut On the Mtn Laurel Road. His résumé includes solo performances on festival stages from Newport Folk to Austin City Limits to End of the Road, but his creative compass remains grounded in community, playing alongside artists including Caroline, Uwade, and Robin Pecknold of Fleet Foxes.
