Mondo Gascaro: Two Decades of Cinematic Soundscapes in Indonesian Pop Music

Singer-songwriter and composer Mondo Gascaro has been a defining figure in Indonesian music for over two decades. From co-founding the acclaimed band Sore to establishing himself as a solo artist, film scorer, and producer, the Indonesian-Japanese musician is celebrated for crafting richly cinematic works that blend diverse genres with a unique personal touch. As Mondo turns 50 in 2025, it marks a reflective milestone, a telescope through which to view the evolution of his artistry and anticipate new creative frontiers.

Raised around the eclectic sounds of his parents’ Japanese karaoke club, Mondo absorbed influences ranging from The Beatles, AOR, jazz, and cinema that would later shape his intimate, layered, and genre-defying sound.

Apart from SORE, his work as a producer included Payung Teduh - Dunia Batas which he relesead under his label Ivy League Music. His career as a solo artist took off with his debut Rajakelana (2016) which was praised widely, even earning Album of the Year from Tempo magazine.

Beyond albums, Mondo has composed scores for notable films such as Love for Share (2006), The Forbidden Door (2008), and Memories of My Body (2018)—for which he won the prestigious Citra Award for Best Music Director.
