Ryan O’Reilly is a songwriter from Oxford, UK, whose Irish roots and English upbringing shape his vivid storytelling . His musical journey began with open-mics in Toronto, poetry studies in Dublin, and busking on London’s Portobello Road, where viral street performances built a loyal following across Europe and Canada.
In 2011, at the height of his popularity on Portobello Road—a street rich in musical history—Ryan was violently confronted by council officers, who broke his hand and smashed his guitar. Despite many horrified witnesses, the council denied responsibility, had Ryan arrested, and fabricated charges. With the help of talented lawyers who were also fans, Ryan defeated the charge, received compensation, and saw the assailants dismissed.
The spirit of Portobello lived on, with fans discovering & sharing his music with self-made CDs and booking DIY tours across Europe.
Albums:
(2016) The Northern Line chronicled chaotic London life. Released on Qatari indie label DNA.
(2018) I Can't Stand the Sound recorded in NYC with Toronto’s Dwayne Gretzky captured the turbulence of the USA in 2016.
(2023) Other Plans - produced Dave Granshaw / Spencer Cullum explored pandemic loneliness.
Ryan has written with acclaimed acts Flyte, Amistat & Anna Vaverková and lectures in songwriting at BIMM Berlin.
Collaborations with composer Blair Mowat & Jadea Kelly have appeared in TV & Film.
Praised as “mesmeric live” Ryan’s music is defined by intimacy, passion, and poetry.
