Born in Tokyo on February 23, 1955. After graduating from high school in 1973 he spent some time working at a motorcycle company in Farnham, Surrey England and travelled extensively in Europe. He enrolled in Northland College in Ashland, Wisconsin in 1975 and then transferred to Berkley College of Music in 1976. In August of 1978 he moved to Minnesota and enrolled in the music department of the University of Minnesota, Duluth.
Over the next four years he majored in classical piano and studied theory, orchestration, and composition.
