DJ/Composer Ali Shaheed Muhammad is a hip-hop icon. As one-third of legendary hip-hop group ATribeCalledQuest, his influence and impact on the musical landscape is still felt today. The Brooklyn native began a life of music at an early age, DJing parties in his Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood before co-founding Tribe in 1985.

In 1999, he co-founded the Grammy nominated all-star trio Lucy Pearl with Dawn Robinson and Raphael Saadiq. The group’s organic fusion of funk, rock, R&B, and hip-hop revealed Ali’s expansive musicality.

After Lucy Pearl, Ali released his very personal solo debut LP Shaheedulah and Stereotypes, featuring some of his proteges.

Ali has worked with a range of artist from Angie Stone, D’Angelo, “Doc” McKinney, Greg Osby, John Legend, Merna, and The Weeknd to name a few.

In 2013, Ali received an invite from Adrian Younge to work on The Souls of Mischief’s There Is Only Now, album. The results ignited the birth of The Midnight Hour. It is a blend of Muhammad’s jazz-inflected chord progressions, and Younge’s psych-drenched soul. With appearances including Raphael Saadiq, Cee Lo and a re-imagined version of Luther Vandross’ “So Amazing.”

With 30 a year career span under his belt Mr. Muhammad is far from slowing down. He and Younge scored the music to the Netflix/Marvel series Luke Cage. They have a number of projects slated for 2019. When asked about the follow up to his solo album Muhammad simply says, “workin’ on it.”
