Fondé en 1967. Héritier de la Société des concerts du Conservatoire fondée en 1828, l’orchestre de Paris a donné son concert inaugural en novembre 1967 sous la direction de Charles Munch.
Après le décès de son père fondateur, la direction musicale de l’orchestre a été confiée successivement à Herbert von Karajan, sir Georg Solti, Daniel Barenboim, Semyon Bychkov, Christoph von Dohnányi, Christoph Eschenbach, Paavo Järvi et Daniel Harding.
