高知県土佐清水市出身。唯一無二の歌声と、SOUL・R&B・JAZZ・ゴスペル・ROCK など、幅広い音楽的バックグラウンドをポップスへと昇華させる、オリジナリティ溢れるサウンドが魅力のシンガーソングライター。高校卒業後、１８歳の時に突如音楽に目覚め、２０歳で上京。２２歳で単身ＬＡに渡り、独学でピアノを始める。２００９年 Sg『ストーリー』 でメジャーデビュー。自身の楽曲だけでなく、小泉今日子、坂本真綾、SMAP、Sexy Zone、Da-iCE、DISH//、土岐麻子、新妻聖子、薬師丸ひろ子、和田ア キ子、等多くのアーティストに楽曲提供をおこなっている。２０１８年から世界中を旅しながら、John Scofield(Gt), Ray Parker Jr.(Gt), Bluey from ncognito(Gt), Stuart Zender(Bs ex.Jamiroquai), Terrace Martin(Sax), Nicholas Payton(TP), Renato Neto(Key)など世界的なプレイヤーとのレコーディングを実現。２０２１年５月１２日に８枚目のオリジナルアルバム『愛の出番 ＋thanks to』をリリース。２０２２年６月２２日、「Whale Song」（酔鯨酒造５０周年記念ムービーテーマソング）をはじめ、故郷・高知にまつわる楽曲を集めた『Whale Song EP』をリリースし、iTunes R&B チャートにて１位を獲得（連続１位獲得記録を更新中）。２０２３年４月８日は、４年越しの野音ライブ『SAKAI YU “LOVERS” CONCERT 2023 in YAON』を開催した。NHK 2023年度後期 連続テレビ小説『ブギウギ』の主題歌に参加。
