Started by experiments in a student flat above Lazer Quest by Brighton’s shores, multi-instrumentalist Heather Sheret and drummer Jack Watkins started their journey to create HANYA with the intention to have no intention. With each release the Brighton quartet have honed their accidentally gritty dream-pop sound, akin to a Beach House collaboration with Kurt Vile. By incorporating long-time friend Benjamin Varnes on production and guitar duties the group released ‘Sea Shoes’ and follow-up ‘100 Metre Sprint’ showcasing their ability to craft instantly memorable hooks whilst remaining intricate and entirely unique, all the while their introspective lyrics serve as a reminder that this music remains deeply personal to the group.
Having played a notably rammed set at this year’s Green Man Festival, HANYA have continued to receive praise from the likes of NME, NPR, Line Of Best Fit, The Quietus, as well as radio support from Lauren Laverne, Steve Lamacq (BBC Radio 6) and Jack Saunders (BBC Radio 1).
